Traditional Medicine or Alternative? Why Not Both?
Traditional Medicine or Alternative? Why Not Both?

Illness—whether physical, emotional, or mental—can be scary and stressful. Period.

When symptoms appear, there’s often more to manage than just the illness itself. One of the first things we tend to ask ourselves is: How long will this last? or What should I do next? Sometimes, we assume the problem is minor and just needs time to pass. But let’s be honest—when we first notice symptoms, we can easily ask ourselves a hundred questions.

One of the biggest questions for many people is: Should I see a doctor or try to manage this naturally at home? That’s a reasonable and important starting point.

Some people immediately schedule an appointment with their primary care provider or nurse practitioner at the first sign of trouble. Others might reach for essential oils, head to a health food store, or schedule time with a naturopath or chiropractor.

Let’s take a moment to look at what motivates those choices.

What’s Behind the Preference?

Traditional or conventional medicine typically treats specific symptoms or diseases using medications, procedures, or surgeries—all based on scientific evidence of effectiveness and safety.

On the other hand, alternative or complementary medicine focuses more on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. This category includes naturopathy, acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, chiropractic care, reflexology, homeopathy, herbal remedies, and more.

So, why might someone lean strongly one way or the other?

Maybe they’ve heard horror stories—misdiagnoses, side effects, or medication errors. Or maybe the medical environment itself triggers anxiety. On the flip side, perhaps they’ve experienced (or heard of) amazing breakthroughs from natural remedies—like peppermint for nausea, pickle juice for cramps, or breathwork to lower blood pressure.
I once knew someone who successfully managed his blood pressure through deep breathing techniques—and planned to rely on this method exclusively. Meanwhile, others prefer strictly conventional medicine and resist any talk of lifestyle changes or natural remedies. For instance, someone with diabetes might rely solely on medication and decline any recommendations related to diet or exercise.

So, Which Path Should You Choose?

Here’s a thought: Why not both?

Yes, the horror stories are real. And so are the hives from just walking into a hospital waiting room. Your concerns are valid—and so is your illness. But ignoring or resisting symptoms instead of actively treating them can lead to harsh, irreversible consequences.

This is especially true in the realm of mental health. Consider someone struggling with a severe alcohol use disorder. They may try to quit cold turkey—or they may avoid addressing the problem altogether due to fear, pride, or denial. Unfortunately, failure to act (or relying on the wrong kind of support) can lead to dangerous withdrawals, liver failure, serious injury, or even death.

At Tranquil Quest Mental Health, we believe in holistic and integrative care. We encourage our patients to share their values, beliefs, and concerns—so that together, we can build a treatment plan that feels right for them and works effectively. Whether it involves medication, mindfulness, nutrition, or a blend of all three, we’re committed to walking that journey with you.
